Police seek detention of Fitburg crew member over cable damage

Finnish police have requested the pre-trial detention of an Azerbaijani crew member from the cargo ship Fitburg, which is suspected of causing serious damage to a submarine telecommunications cable in the Gulf of Finland. The request follows the seizure of the vessel by Finnish authorities after the incident, which disrupted Elisa’s undersea data connection between Helsinki and Tallinn. The ship, sailing under the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, was operating in the area at the time of the cable break.
