'We want people to understand what is happening' - Activists rally in Amsterdam in support of Iran protests

"Demonstrators rallied at central Amsterdam's Dam Square on Saturday, in solidarity with protests ongoing in Iran. Footage shows activists holding Iranian flags and portraits of the deceased protesters, while chanting slogans and calling for international recognition of the protest movement. "We ask for international support, recognition for the Iranian people that they can resist. But especially support and recognition for their right to defend themselves," a demonstrator named Minouche said. Kiana, a Canada national, referred to recent deaths during demonstrations in Iran. Speaking about a man she said was killed days earlier, she told reporters: "He went into the streets with only his voice. He was unarmed. He was killed simply for freedom." "We want people to understand what is happening in Iran and support the people in Iran," Kiana concluded. The protests began with traders in Tehran demonstrating against the sharp devaluation of the Iranian rial and difficult economic conditions and have since spread to other cities. According to local media reports, President Pezeshkian described the government's goal as an effort 'to alleviate living pressures on the people and prevent corruption in the supply chains,' emphasising the government's openness 'to criticism, oversight, and support from all concerned citizens'."
