'In Maduro's absence, she leads' - Brazil backs Delcy Rodriguez as interim Venezuelan president amid fallout from US strikes

"The Brazilian government recognised Delcy Rodriguez as interim president of Venezuela on Saturday, following the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a US military operation in Caracas. During a press conference in Brasilia, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the South American country, Maria Laura Rocha, stated that due to the absence of the Venezuelan leader, it falls to Delcy Rodriguez to lead the country. "In the absence of the current president, Maduro, it is the vice president [Delcy Rodríguez]. She is serving as interim president," she said. The Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela (TSJ) ordered that the Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, immediately assume the presidency of the Republic, in compliance with Venezuelan laws. The Secretary General of Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Laura Rocha, also said that the possibility is being considered of holding a meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) on Sunday, an intergovernmental mechanism that brings together the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, to address the United States attack against Venezuela and the capture of Maduro. "We have to wait and see how this will develop. I believe that the Security Council meeting, the meetings that will take place from now on, may make clearer what is right," she added. For his part, Brazil's Defence Minister Jose Mucio Monteiro Filho reported that following US attacks on Venezuela, the border between Brazil and the Caribbean country remains “calm. The borders are open. There are no restrictions." Following the US military action at several military bases in Venezuela and the detention of Maduro and his wife, both were transferred to New York to face charges of participation in drug trafficking. Maduro and his wife will remain at the Metropolitan Detention Centre, a federal prison in Brooklyn, known for housing high-profile inmates, while their legal situation is determined."
