Hundreds in Milan condemn US 'imperialist' operation in Venezuela, decry Europe's 'deafening' silence toward Washington

"Hundreds convened outside the US Consulate General in Milan on Saturday to condemn Washington's operation in Venezuela, which saw President Nicolas Maduro captured and flown to New York for upcoming trials. Footage shows protesters chanting while waving flags, holding signs and banners with slogans such as 'From Palestine to Venezuela, stop US colonialism', 'Yankees go home!', or 'Hands off Venezuela', among others. Police were also on standby to monitor the situation. "[We are here] to condemn this imperialist action by the United States, which now considers the world as its own property, and therefore intervenes according to its geopolitical and international interests, as well as its economic interests," shared a protester. He also criticised European nations for their 'deafening silence', accusing them of backing Ukraine while staying quiet on the Gaza war to avoid crossing Washington and President Donald Trump. The demo outside the US consulate gathered around 300 participants from various organisations and took place without incident, according to local media. Following the US military action at several military bases in Venezuela and the detention of Maduro and his wife, both were transferred to New York to face charges of participation in drug trafficking. Maduro and his wife will remain at the Metropolitan Detention Centre, a federal prison in Brooklyn, known for housing high-profile inmates, while their legal situation is determined."
