Philippines urges restoration or order in Venezuela

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines on Monday expressed concern over the evolving events in Venezuela and its impact on peace and stability in the region as well as on the rules-based international order. Manila, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), urged concerned parties to restore peace and order in Venezuela and promote the safety of all the people, including the 74 Filipinos living in Venezuela and the surrounding countries. The DFA issued the statement following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife by American special forces to face trial in the United States for alleged narco-terrorism. While acknowledging the US' security considerations, the Philippines stressed the "relevant principles of international law, including the independence and sovereign equality of states." Manila sought the "peaceful resolution of disputes, the prohibition against the threat or use of force, and non-interference in the domestic affairs of sovereign states." The Philippines called on concerned parties to "respect international law, including the United Nations Charter, and exercise restraint to prevent escalation of conflict." The Philippine Embassy in Bogota, which serves as non-resident mission for Venezuela, over the weekend issued a travel and safety advisory to Filipinos in Venezuela amid the volatile political situation there.
