‘Let us not allow force, barbarism to prevail over international law’ - Cuban FM blasts US ‘ignorance of history’ at CELAC reunion

"Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, urged the international community to reject the US attack on Venezuela and to demand the ‘immediate and unconditional release’ of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. Rodriguez was taking part in an extraordinary CELAC session on Sunday, where he criticised the military attack against Caracas on 3 January. He said the attack must be considered an "aggression against the entirety of the nations that make up our community", and warned that ‘force and barbarism’ would not be allowed to prevail over international law. "It will be necessary to demand accountability from those responsible for these aggressions and for the deaths that have occurred," Bruno Rodriguez said. "Cuba rejects the brutal intention to impose the Monroe Doctrine by military force," he noted, questioning President Donald Trump's intentions regarding the political future of Venezuela. "Let us defend the rights of the Venezuelan family, stop the war, stop the abuse, act with the firmness and determination that circumstances demand," he added. Nicolas Maduro was detained along with Venezuela's First Lady Cilia Flores in the early hours of Saturday, when attacks were reported in Caracas and Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira. Following their detention, Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores were transferred to a detention centre in New York. The US has accused the Venezuelan president of acts of ‘narco-terrorism’."
