GE Lighting introduces DIY-installed smart shades

Smart shades are among the most sophisticated and elegant window treatments you can buy for your home, but they’ve traditionally been very expensive and required a professional to install them. GE Lighting is helping to change that with its new line of Matter-compatible roller shades. GE Lighting says its motorized roller shades (there is no honeycomb version) boast a screw-free installation with no exposed hardware afterward. Each shade is powered by a rechargeable battery said to last six months on a charge. A magnetic connection enables the battery to be recharged with the shade in place, a superior solution to needing to drag a cable or relying on disposable batteries that must be replaced. A magnetic charging cable is included. GE Lighting GE Lighting’s smart shades are available with your choice of light-filtering or room-darkening fabrics—in white or soft gray—with black or white aluminum trim. They can be controlled with GE Lighting’s app—which supports automatic open/close schedules—a wireless remote control (included), or with any Matter-over-Thread compatible smart home platform, including Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, and Samsung SmartThings. Note that the remote is a single-channel model, which presumably means you’ll need one remote for each shade. I’m sure it will be possible to group shades together in the GE Lighting app or in your smart home platform of choice, so they open and close in sync. GE smart shades are available now in multiple widths and in lengths up to 76 inches high. GE smart shades are available now at prices starting at $299.99. They can be purchased at Shop.GELighting.com , where you’ll also find measuring and installation guides, or at Amazon .
