'Illegitimate armed attack, including bombings, loss of civilian life and kidnapping of president' - Venezuela blasts US at UNSC

"Samuel Reinaldo Moncada Acosta, Venezuelan Representative to UN, hit out at the 'flagrant violation of the UN charter' following US attacks on his country and the 'capture' of president Nicolas Maduro, during a heated session of the UNSC on Monday. "?The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela was subjected to an illegitimate armed attack, lacking any legal justification, by the government of the United States of America, which included bombings on its territory, loss of civilian and military lives, destruction of essential infrastructure, and the kidnapping of the constitutional president of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, and the first lady, Cilia Flores," he said. "Venezuela appears before this Council today with a deep conviction. International peace can only be sustained if international law is respected, without exceptions, without double standards, and without selective interpretations. The events of January 3 constitute a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter," he added. Nicolas Maduro was grabbed by US forces alongside First Lady Cilia Flores in the early hours of Saturday, after strikes on Caracas and other areas - and held, according to DC on 'narcoterrorism' charges. Caracas declared a national emergency, accusing Washington of attempting to "seize Venezuela’s strategic resources, particularly its oil and minerals." At the UNSC, the US insisted that there was 'no war against Venezuela' and called it a 'surgical law enforcement operation'. Other countries, including Russia, China and Colombia condemned the latest military action. Russian UN representative Vassily Nebenzia said there was 'no justification for US crimes in Venezuela' while China's representative added that the country was 'deeply shocked by bullying behaviour' from Washington. The African A3 said it had 'deep concerns'. Saturday's attack drew widespread condemnation worldwide, including from Latin America, as well as from BRICS nations such as Russia and China and around the world. The EU and European nations called for 'international law' to be respected but avoided directly condemning the US actions. "
