'I am not guilty, I am a decent man, and I remain the president of my country' - Maduro back to detention centre ahead of March 17 hearing

"Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro told a New York court 'I am not guilty, I am a decent man, and I remain the president of my country' as he made his first appearance on Monday. Footage shows the motorcade taking Maduro back to the detention centre from the courthouse. Court proceedings with US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein began around 12:00 local time (17:00 GMT). Maduro and his wife Cilia pleaded not guilty to all charges. The president is scheduled to appear at a hearing on March 17. Maduro was grabbed by US forces alongside First Lady Cilia Flores in the early hours of Saturday, after strikes on Caracas and other areas - and held, according to Washington on 'narcoterrorism' charges. Donald Trump has vowed that his team will 'run' Venezuela and have US oil firms take charge - warning VP Delcy Rodriguez she'd pay a 'very big price' if she didn't co-operate. Caracas declared a national emergency, accusing Washington of attempting to "seize Venezuela’s strategic resources, particularly its oil and minerals." The attack drew widespread condemnation worldwide, including from many countries in Latin America, as well as from BRICS nations and the Global South. The EU and European nations called for 'international law' to be respected but avoided directly condemning the US actions."
