‘Not by force, but always through dialogue’ - Sheinbaum on LatAm relations with US as Trump threatens Colombia, Cuba, Mexico

"Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, joined the position of Colombia and Spain to express her rejection of the United States military intervention in Venezuela, during her morning press conference this Monday in Mexico City. The Mexican leader reported that she held a call with the presidents of Colombia and Spain, Gustavo Petro and Pedro Sanchez respectively, to set a position regarding the United States attacks carried out in the Caribbean country on 3 January. "I spoke with President Petro on Saturday. And I spoke with President Sanchez of Spain. He contacted me, I spoke with him and from there this joint position emerged," she said. Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexico will always "respect the sovereignty of nations" and assured that each country's government is the only one that can decide how to manage its natural resources, while defending that the relations with US should “should not be by force, but always through dialogue and understanding.” She also called on countries in the region to build an "economic bloc" to "strengthen the entire continent" and, in that way, compete with other powers such as China. "It should not be by force, but always through dialogue and understanding," she added. Regarding her relationship with the United States, Sheinbaum said that "there is coordination and collaboration", but not subordination. "There is even information that the United States government provides us (...) In Mexico there is intelligence cooperation," she recognized. Sheinbaum also rejected the possibility of an "invasion" of Mexico by the United States. "He [Donald Trump] has on several occasions insisted that the United States Army could enter Mexico and we have said no very firmly," she stated. Following the attacks of 3 January in Venezuela, President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were detained. This Monday, both appeared before a court in Manhattan, New York, to make their first appearance before a judge, due to charges related to alleged acts of drug trafficking. "
