Remembering Qazi Hussain: PDP underscores need for politics of unity, tolerance

KARACHI: Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor has said Pakistan needs urgent political reforms and giving centre stage to politicians in policy making and overall running the country. Remembering the ionic leader and great political reformist, Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Altaf Shakoor here Tuesday said the country today badly needs his legendary political wisdom, approach to broader unity and a true focus to the empowerment of youth. Altaf Shakoor said Qazi Hussain Ahmad firmly believed in the power of youth. He said our youths could really move the mountains if their immense energy is properly channelised. He said in the past when students’ politics was alive, youth and students’ organisations would set the national agenda. Though now in Pakistan the student’s politics is practically dead and buried but in Bangladesh we still see these flames burning. He suggested establishing a research institution on the vision of Qazi Hussain Ahmad and also to adopt this vision in our contemporary political life. He said, “Pasban is proud to be the brainchild of Qazi Hussain Ahmad and it is still the most formidable organization of the youth in Pakistan. This movement from Pasban of the past to today’s Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) has always fought injustice at every front bravely. We are a vanguard movement in Pakistan fighting for the basic rights of people.” Altaf Shakoor remembered that Qazi Hussain Ahmad would firmly believe in a politics of unity, cooperation and broader participation. He would take along the politicians and activists belonging to different schools of thought. He was a true patriot Pakistani and a pious religious leader. He understood the basic dynamics of Pakistani politics and firmly believed in a united broad-based political struggle. In politics, he was against ‘solo flights’. He said today Pakistani political parties and personalities are dancing to the tune of establishment only because of their tendency to solo flights and avoidance of unity and political alliances. He said there is dire need to form new political alliances in Pakistan over minimum agendas. Working relationships amongst all political stakeholders is a must. If we follow the vision of Qazi Hussain Ahmad in this regard, our politics could be easily freed from the clutches of the establishment. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
