"In a landmark achievement for international conservation, Taman Safari Indonesia in Bogor, West Java, has welcomed the nation’s first giant panda cub. The male cub, named Satrio Wiratama, or Rio, meaning 'hero', was personally chosen by President Prabowo Subianto. Footage captured on Tuesday highlights an event where guests were presented with a video of Rio being cared for by his mother, Hu Chun. Guests observed as the cub was weighed and measured to monitor his growth; however, he is not yet available for public viewing. Born on November 27 last year through assisted reproductive technology, Rio’s birth was the result of a dedicated effort by a team of doctors. Dr Bongot Huaso Mulia, a veterinarian representing Taman Safari Indonesia, explained, "We first accommodate the light to enable natural mating, but this comes with challenges, such as requiring experience from both panda partners and a lengthy process that can hinder fertility." He said, "Hence, their best option was assisted reproduction technology or artificial insemination." Mulia shared insights about Rio, stating, "This panda cub is highly dependent on its mother. He is blind and deaf until he reaches 100 days old. At that point, he will begin to open his eyes and ears." Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni expressed his joy, stating, "Three presidents have witnessed the development of pandas in Indonesia, which further strengthens diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the People's Republic of China." Rio represents the crowning success of the Indonesia-China Giant Panda Conservation Partnership, which began in 2017 with the arrival of parent pandas Cai Tao and Hu Chun as part of a 10-year joint research programme. Indonesia now joins Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand as the fourth Asian country outside China to breed a giant panda in captivity."
