MANILA, Philippines — Bicol Saro Partylist Rep. Terry Ridon said that any move to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte would not be motivated by any promise of projects in the 2026 Budget. His statement comes as the one-year ban on Duterte's impeachment lapses on Feb. 6, as several groups aim to file new impeachment cases against her. The Supreme Court ruled in July that Duterte's impeachment was unconstitutional because there was a violation of due process during the impeachment proceedings. In a press conference on Wednesday, Ridon said that any move to file impeachment charges against Duterte would be "undertaken independently of whatever it is alleged" against her. "Impeachment proceedings are not based on projects that are promised, impeachment proceedings are based on quests for truth and accountability, particularly on the use of confidential funds. So the basis for the impeachment last year has not changed actually for 2026," Ridon said. Ridon added that lawmakers who aimed to support the impeachment would "not be motivated by any promises of any projects" in 2026. In a statement last December, Duterte said that some lawmakers would file an impeachment case against her as a "bargaining chip" in the 2026 budget, noting a statement by Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco and Sen. Francis Escudero that signatures for impeachment were gathered in exchange for budget allocations.
