Haredi draft row - Ultra-Orthodox Jews rally against mandatory military service in Jerusalem

"Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews gathered in Jerusalem on Tuesday evening to protest against mandatory military service in the Israeli army. Footage shows protesters chanting and dancing in the streets while holding placards, as Israeli police officers maintained a security presence in the area. According to local reports, one ultra-Orthodox protester was killed, and three others were injured after a car rammed into demonstrators during the protest on Tuesday evening. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. Media reports said the protest was organised by a group of senior ultra-Orthodox rabbis. The ultra-Orthodox community, also known as the Haredim, argues that it contributes to Israel’s security and protection through religious study and prayer rather than military service. Last year, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that ultra-Orthodox men must perform mandatory military service, in line with requirements that apply to most Israeli men and women from the age of 18. The ruling ended decades of exemptions that had allowed many ultra-Orthodox men to avoid conscription."
