"Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un visited the construction site of a war memorial in Pyongyang on Monday to honour North Korean troops killed in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Footage released on Tuesday shows Kim driving a forklift while his daughter, Ju-ae, and several men stood on the blade, as he carefully manoeuvred the heavy machinery around the site. According to state media, Kim, alongside his daughter and wife Ri Sol-ju, inspected the construction of the Memorial Museum of Combat Feats at the Overseas Military Operations, with senior party and government officials. The visit coincided with a summit between the Republic of Korea (ROK) President Lee Jae-myung and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Kim described the memorial museum project as a 'grand monument' to the 'heroism and bravery' of DPRK troops, adding that it embodies the "crystallisation of our party and people's eternal gratitude and respect for the representatives of the great fame of the country." He also emphasised that the new war museum would serve as a critical ideological centre for instilling revolutionary traditions, showcasing the nation’s strength and army's invincibility, while proclaiming the 'immortality' of North Korea to the world. "Through the construction, another important ideological and spiritual base for education in the tradition of victory will be provided in the capital city of our state and, alongside the establishment of the museum, our people will powerfully demonstrate before the world the immortality of the DPRK," Kim said. In August last year, Kim awarded state honours to soldiers deployed abroad and announced plans to establish a residential area for bereaved families in Daesong District, Pyongyang. The memorial is being built in the Hwasong District, known as Pyongyang’s ‘new town’, and will feature a cemetery for fallen soldiers, a memorial hall, and a commemorative monument."
