Mayon volcano shows crater glow and active lava dome — PHIVOLCS

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Mayon Volcano showed a glowing summit and an active lava dome on Wednesday evening, January 7. Camera footage captured the activity between 6:36 p.m. and 7 p.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. The crater glow, locally called “banaag”, appeared as superheated volcanic gas from new magma lit up the summit’s atmosphere. Phivolcs also saw an incandescent lava dome. Fresh volcanic material from rockfalls and short pyroclastic density currents (uson) moved down the Bonga Gully.
