Blizzard of inactivity - Snowstorm brings Netherlands to standstill, grounding hundreds of flights

"Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport reported the cancellation of more than 718 flights on Wednesday morning, marking the sixth consecutive day of major air traffic disruption. Thousands of travelers were left stranded as snow continued to fall across the country. The powerful snowstorm has brought the Netherlands to a standstill, emptying streets, closing schools, and grounding hundreds of flights. According to the national weather station in De Bilt, snowfall since the start of 2026 is the heaviest in the past five years. Drone footage captured in Rotterdam shows the Erasmus Bridge and surrounding streets blanketed in white, with locals struggling to walk through the storm. Streets, bridges, and bus stations across cities remain deserted, while schools have suspended classes for safety reasons. Rail workers are seen clearing snow from tracks, which remain partially closed. At Rotterdam Centraal Station, platforms were nearly empty with train services halted. The national rail operator ProRail said icy conditions have slowed snow-clearing operations and delayed trains from reaching maintenance facilities. Schedules are being adjusted, and further disruptions are expected if the storm continues. Authorities have urged residents to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel as the snowstorm continues to affect daily life across the country."
