"Head of the Hungarian Prime Minister's Office, Gergely Gulyas, on Tuesday declared that Budapest will not allow Ukraine's accession to the European Union, ‘single-handedly preventing’ the bid if needed. “In the 20-point Ukrainian plan, which has not yet been made public, but the European Union has officially provided information about it, the Ukrainian accession on January 1, 2027, is included. We consider this completely impossible, unacceptable, and inconceivable,” he said during a press conference in Budapest. “We believe that Hungary is not alone in this, although we can single-handedly prevent the Ukrainian accession,” he continued. “I repeat here that Hungary does not support Ukraine's accession to the Union, and if necessary, we will also prevent it from doing so.” Gulyas also severely criticised the request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for $800 billion in 'reconstruction' and 'development' for Ukraine, made during a meeting on Saturday with 15 national security advisers from Ukraine's key allies, along with representatives from NATO and the EU. The minister emphasised that this amount is enough to ‘pay pensions in Hungary for 40 years’. “We see that Ukraine basically wants to live off Europe for ten years,” Gulyas said, noting that Brussels “willingness to bankroll ‘any bill for Ukraine is extremely dangerous.” “The only guarantee against this is the current Hungarian government,” he added. “It's no wonder that both Brussels and Kiev want a Brussels- and Ukraine-friendly government in Hungary because the current one is unwilling to foot the bill.” Under the proposal, $500 billion would come from public funding through grants and concessional low-interest loans, with an additional $300 billion from private capital.  The EU recently approved an additional 90 billion euros in loans to Kiev over the next two years, after the bloc failed to agree on a proposal to use 210 billion euros from frozen Russian assets.
