"Sheikh Zain al-Abidin Mosque in Aleppo opened its doors to displaced residents forced to leave their homes amid clashes between Syrian transitional government forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Footage filmed on Thursday shows families with children sheltering inside the mosque, while volunteers from various organisations carried aid packages into the building. Mahmud Haj Hasan, a campaign organiser and head of the Shuhada neighbourhood, said the displaced families were received and provided with all essential supplies. “Nearly 350 people were here yesterday,” he said, adding that those who arrived later were transferred to a newly opened shelter at the Huzaifa Mosque. Clashes between the two sides resumed three days ago, with each accusing the other of targeting civilians. The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces said shelling by transitional government forces has killed eight people and wounded 57 others. On Thursday, the SDF Media Centre reported that artillery and rocket shelling intensified overnight, claiming drones were also used against the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighbourhoods for the third consecutive day. The 'White Helmets' Syrian Civil Defence group said that they had evacuated more than 3,000 civilians from Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh, provided first aid services, and relocated families to temporary shelters inside Aleppo, including three mosques. The Operations Command of the Transitional Government Forces declared Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh a 'closed military zone'. Earlier on Thursday, it announced that military operations against SDF positions would begin at 1:30 pm local time. The renewed fighting comes two days after officials from both sides held talks on implementing the so-called 'March Agreement' - but with no reported breakthrough. On March 10 last year, Syrian transitional leader Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi signed an agreement to integrate all civil and military institutions affiliated with the Kurdish self-administration into the framework of the Syrian state by the end of 2025. Syria’s current transitional government came to power following the December 2024 takeover. Al-Sharaa later appointed transitional president, pledging to form an inclusive government."
