Farmers Plot Mass Rally in Athens as Showdown with Mitsotakis Looms

Greek farmers are weighing a plan to descend on Athens for a mass rally, aiming to stage a major show of force to coincide with upcoming talks with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Representatives from the strategic Nikaia blockade in central Greece will formally propose the escalation during a nationwide assembly on Saturday. Organizers told local media that pressure must be maintained regardless of the dialogue with the government, warning that "the real struggle begins on Tuesday." The Panhellenic Committee of Roadblocks has convened the critical meeting for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Nikaia Cultural Center. Delegates from dozens of roadblocks will gather to finalize their demands and select the representatives who will negotiate directly with Mr. Mitsotakis. The agricultural sector has been in turmoil for weeks, with tractors blocking highways and border crossings to protest soaring energy costs and collapsing incomes. While Mr. Mitsotakis has agreed to meet a unified delegation, his government insists it has no fiscal room for further financial concessions. Farmers argue that without binding guarantees, the protests will not end. The decision on whether to bring the demonstration to the capital’s doorstep will be the centerpiece of Saturday's agenda.
