"Social, student and labour organisations marched through Panama City to mark Martyrs' Day, remembering 21 people killed in clashes with US forces in the 1960s and to voice their solidarity with Venezuela after the recent military operation in Caracas. The event, attended by officials, relatives of the martyrs, and citizens, commemorated the January 9, 1964, protests in which students and civilians were killed while demanding national sovereignty over the Panama Canal Zone. During the event, participants criticised the recent intervention of the United States government in Venezuela, as well as its foreign policy toward the American continent. "What we are witnessing today is no longer just theory or text - it is a harsh and ruthless return to the principles of the early 19th century. In a sense, we have retraced more than two centuries, confronting the deeply troubling and cruel realities unfolding both nationally and internationally," said one of the rally participants. "The so‑called Trump corollary is nothing more than a follow-up of the bloody interventions Panama endured at the hands of the United States - a hegemonic power that has already lost that status. The current posture of intervening in the internal affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the forcible removal of its constitutional president are acts of desperation, not strength," said Luis Romero Chatru, Panamanian historian. The commemoration highlighted the importance of remembering historical struggles and reinforced a regional commitment to peace and solidarity among nations."
