In the hot seat - Locals 'terrified' as Mount Mayon spits lava, threatens to blow

"Residents living on the slopes of Mount Mayon in the Philippines said fear is mounting as volcanic activity intensifies, with families preparing to evacuate amid the risk of sudden pyroclastic flows. “We are terrified because of Mayon volcano’s unrest, and we are ready to evacuate to save our kids,” said Girlie Llandelar, a resident of Daraga in Albay. As evacuation centres begin to fill, residents voiced concern over basic needs and longer-term assistance. “If we go to evacuation, hopefully the government will help us, especially our children,” Llandelar said. Authorities have enforced a six-kilometre Permanent Danger Zone, setting up police checkpoints along major access roads to prevent residents and vehicles from entering high-risk areas near the volcano. State volcanologists recorded around 100 pyroclastic density currents and more than 70 rockfall events at Mount Mayon on Friday, after a collapsing lava dome sent hot volcanic material down the volcano’s southern gullies. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the heightened activity was driven by repeated collapses of a newly formed lava dome near the summit. PHIVOLCS said Mount Mayon remains under Alert Level 3, indicating magmatic unrest. While the current eruption is characterised by slow-moving lava, officials warned that a more explosive phase cannot be ruled out in the coming days or weeks."
