Magellanic penguins offer spectacle - Tourists visit Magdalena Island to see thousands of non-volant birds

"Thousands of Magellanic penguin annually coming to Los Pinguinos Natural Monument, a protected area dedicated to the conservation of the species, located on Chilean Patagonia's Magdalena Island. The penguin season on the island begins in November and runs through March, coinciding with the species' breeding period. The footage shows dozens of tourists gathered to witness a unique spectacle of the penguins nesting and caring for their chicks. The company Transbordadora Austral Broom S.A. (TABSA) offers a ferry tour departing from Punta Arenas to Magdalena Island, where it is possible to observe different species depending on the season, including whales, sea lions and birds, according to a company guide. "I am very delighted, it was the first time I had this opportunity and nature is incredible," said a Brazilian tourist who witnessed the spectacle. Ana, a tourist from Poland, warned about the importance of preserving this species, which is currently in crisis, with reports indicating that its population on Magdalena Island has fallen by 85 percent. "This environment is so unique to the entire world, and it's very precious and we need to preserve so all our future generations can enjoy the beauty of the environment and the natural habitat, and we want to protect them so they live for the next generations to enjoy the same thing that we are doing right now," she said. It is estimated that around 6,000 breeding pairs remain, far from the more than 60,000 recorded at the end of the 2000s, according to local media citing rangers from the National Forestry Corporation."
