'Our youth are drowning in blood' – Dozens rally in Iraq’s Dohuk as Kurds show solidarity with Aleppo

"Dozens of Kurds rallied in Dohuk, Iraq's Kurdistan region, on Saturday to show support for their brothers in Aleppo as fighting between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and transitional government forces flared up in the neighbourhoods of Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsoud. Footage shows protesters hoisting the Kurdish flags and signs depicting a map of Kurdistan, alongside slogans that read 'No to genocide against Kurds.' "We came in support of the neighbourhoods of Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsoud. For more than three days, our youth are drowning in blood, our women are dying of hunger and thirst, our heroes and revolutionists are being killed. Where are the human rights [organisations]?" asked protester Badiaa Ismail. Shafan Saeed, a Kurdistan Parliament representative, addressed the UN and the international community, saying, "This war must halt, given it is a Kurdish territory and the objective of the [Syrian transitional] government is to change the geography of the region." The neighbourhoods of Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsoud have witnessed clashes between the SDF and transitional government forces, with both sides trading blame for targeting civilians. The escalation comes two days after a meeting between both sides to discuss the implementation of 'March agreement' as a pertinent deadline has expired. The meeting, however, did not yield results. On March 10, an agreement was signed between the President of the transitional government, Ahmed Al Sharaa, and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi "to integrate all civil and military institutions of the Kurdish self-administration into the Syrian state" by the end of 2025. The agreement has not yet been implemented at the time of publication, given the periodic clashes between the two parties. In December 2024, the current transitional government took over power in Syria. Later, Ahmad al-Sharaa was appointed Syria's transitional president, pledging an 'inclusive technocratic' government."
