Maldonado goes medieval! Uruguay transforms into Middle Ages with cultural festival

"The 13th edition of the Festival Medieval Uruguay opened on Friday at Pittamiglio Castle de Las Flores in Maldonado, inviting visitors on a journey back to the Middle Ages through rich symbolism and traditional displays.  Footage shows the first day of the fair with people wearing clothing inspired by the medieval era. Some visitors engaged in activities including archery, axe throwing, and padded sword fights, while others enjoyed the traditional Artisan Market where blacksmithing, basket weaving, and leatherworking were on display.  "The truth is that at medieval festivals you experience a festive spirit of sharing, of reliving all those times that are so magical," a visitor said. "We travel to the past and immerse ourselves in ancient culture," another added. "You can drink, taste ancestral liquors, you can throw the runes in tarot. You can eat traditional food, you can fight in soft combat." The event takes place from January 9 to 11, being the first time it is held over three days due to the high demand the fair has had in previous years. At this fair, gastronomy also plays a prominent role, with stands offering ancestral drinks, 'potions', and a wide range of medieval-inspired food, according to organisers. The event has officially been recognised as being of tourist interest by the Ministry of Tourism, the Maldonado Intendencia, and the Solis Grande municipality. "
