Mainland drivers see licence e-queuing as home run

Non-local drivers applying for a Hong Kong licence said the Transport Department's new online queuing ticketing system for such licences was convenient and fair. The new system, launched at 7am on Monday, replaces on-site ticket distribution. A 25-year-old student from the mainland, Dai, was among the first drivers to grab an e-ticket. Dai said he accessed the e-ticket website at 6.30am and secured a ticket at 7.02am. “I think it's very convenient as I completed the online queuing process in about five minutes and the officer told me that I would be able to get my driver's licence in about two hours [at the licensing office]," he said. "I think it's a very convenient process.” Dai said it was easier for him to wake up early to get an e-ticket at home rather than having to queue up at the office. The new arrangement makes the queuing process fair, he said, but urged government consideration for the elderly. “I think that young people like me can handle this website well," Dai said. The elderly, however, may find it hard to access the website or how to navigate it once they are in, he said. “So I think the government should think [about] how to find a way for the elderly to get their driver's licence,” Dai said. Another driver from the mainland, who visited the department’s Admiralty office on Monday, said he booked for an appointment online earlier. He said the application process was smooth and he would be able to collect his driver’s licence in one to two hours.
