Legco establishes group coordinating internal affairs

Unionist lawmaker Stanley Ng and former Legislative Council Finance Committee chair Ronick Chan will head a group coordinating Legco affairs, including who will take up leading roles within the legislature this year. This came out of a new internal work meeting among lawmakers on Monday, which was created by new Legco President Starry Lee. Writing on social media, she expressed hope the regular internal meetings could boost efficiency and quality at the council. "The main thing I did during the meeting was to report to lawmakers the establishment of a coordination mechanism on Legco affairs, which will help councillors organise different types of council work in a more effective manner," Lee wrote. The DAB veteran said Ng and Chan will head a 12-member coordination group, which will work out matters such as chairs and vice-chairs of different Legco committees. In previous Legco terms, similar coordination on leaderships existed, but they were mostly conducted in private. Meanwhile, Lee also said Chief Executive John Lee would give a speech on Wednesday in the first council meeting of the new term. He will talk about the government's expectations for Legco, the positive interactions between the executive and the legislature, and the authorities' work in the aftermath of the Wang Fuk Court inferno. The new Legco president said she's also extended discussion time on the government motion about the fire that will be moved by Chief Secretary Eric Chan following the chief executive's remarks.
