"German Chancellor Friedrich Merz demanded that Iran 'protect their citizens instead of threatening them' amid ongoing unrest, during his press briefing with Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad on Monday. "They're protesting peacefully for freedom and a better life in their country. Not only is it their right to do that, I pay tribute to the courage with which they confront the disproportionate amount of violence," he alleged. "And I call upon the Iranian government and leadership to protect their citizens instead of threatening them. The violence directed at the Iranian people is something we condemn in the strongest of terms." He did not comment on the US's own alleged threats against Iran. Tehran has accused Washington of fuelling the unrest, with President Donald Trump telling the authorities on Friday that they had "better not start shooting, because we'll start shooting too." Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei claimed some rioters were destroying property just to 'please' Trump. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Monday that the situation was under 'full control', adding that "Trump's statements regarding the protests constituted interference in our internal affairs". "
