Senate President Sotto ready for impeachment case against Marcos and Duterte

SENATE President Vicente Sotto III said he would act “with dispatch” if impeachment cases against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte are elevated to the upper chamber. The senator made the remark on Tuesday when asked about plans to file impeachment complaints against President Marcos and Vice President Duterte. “One thing is certain, as SP (Senate president), I will act on it with dispatch, forthwith,” Sotto said in a text message. Asked whether he was preparing for such a scenario, he said, “That’s putting the cart before the horse.” “Is there really an impeachment [complaint against them]? Will it prosper in the HOR (House of Representatives)?” Sotto said in Filipino. Malacañang on Monday assured the public that the president will face all charges should an impeachment case against him prosper. Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro issued the statement in reaction to earlier reports that some lawmakers are planning to file an impeachment complaint against Marcos once the session at the House of Representatives resumes, as earlier bared by Caloocan City 2nd District Rep. Edgar Erice. Among the grounds is Marcos’ supposed betrayal of public trust over massive corruption tied to anomalous flood control projects and the perceived questionable enactment of the 2026 General Appropriations Act (GAA), which Castro rejected. “The president is ready at all times because he respects the Constitution, he respects the process,” Castro said in Filipino at a Palace press briefing. “But if we are going to talk about breach of public trust because of the signing of the GAA, the president, first of all, did not steal money. Second, he is the one investigating the anomalous flood control projects and corruption,” Castro said. “Third, he doesn’t have a ‘Mary Grace Piattos,’” she added, referring to one of the alleged “questionable” beneficiaries of confidential funds under the Office of the Vice President. Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon said that any move to impeach Duterte would not be motivated by any promise of projects in the 2026 national budget. His statement comes as the one-year ban on Duterte’s impeachment lapses on Feb. 6, as several groups aim to file new impeachment cases against her. The Supreme Court ruled in July 2025 that Duterte’s impeachment was unconstitutional because there was a violation of due process during the impeachment proceedings. The Senate archived the impeachment case against Duterte.
