Call for higher buyout price for Wang Fuk Court flats

Lawmakers called on Wednesday for the government to raise the price it had set to buy the flats of all Wang Fuk Court owners hit by the Tai Po inferno in November as well as step up mental health support for them. In a questionnaire to the estate's residents that is aimed at gauging their long-term rehousing preferences, such a wholesale purchase to free homeowners up to make their own long-term accommodation arrangements is among the options offered up by the administration. It is proposing a buyout price of HK$6,000 per square foot for flats on which the underlying land premiums have not been paid or HK$8,000 for those with premiums paid. Speaking on RTHK’s In the Chamber programme, DAB chairman Gary Chan suggested increasing the buyout price to make it more acceptable to the homeowners. "Many people have told us that the price is not too attractive and may not help them to find a similar-sized flat," he said. "So I think that the price can be slightly increased, so that the buyout will be more appealing and can help affected households to acquire flats of similar sizes to rebuild their lives.” Chan Hoi-yan, for her part, noted that some Wang Fuk Court residents had been so badly affected by their traumatic experience that loud noises or the sight of flames upset them. “Could we set up some specialised centres for them so that they do not have to keep describing their problems from scratch or be in the same queue as others who are also suffering from mental illnesses?" she said. "I think we should not affect those patients who are already undergoing consultations for mental illnesses. So maybe such centres can be set up in, say Tai Po, to take care of Wang Fuk Court residents?” Chan also said the government could review the workload of each social worker dedicated to helping Wang Fuk Court households every three to six months and that those in charge of less complicated issues could help out with those households that had more issues to tackle.
