"Rio de Janeiro inaugurated a new intelligence 'Situation Room' on Tuesday as part of efforts to expand urban surveillance and strengthen public security coordination. The new facility is part of the Central of Intelligence, Surveillance and Technology in Support of Public Security (CIVITAS), which is integrated into the Rio de Janeiro Operations and Resilience Centre. Footage shows the unveiling of the plaque at the new CIVITAS room, along with images of its operational facilities, which city officials say are already in use. Authorities said the expansion is designed to speed up decision-making, improve response accuracy and enhance coordination between municipal management and public security agencies. “Rio wants to show that it is possible, as a municipality and as a city administration, to collaborate with public security agencies,” said Eduardo Paes. Officials described the new unit as a significant technological and operational upgrade, expanding the city’s capacity to monitor, analyse and support public security investigations and operations. The CIVITAS room integrates advanced data-processing systems, real-time image analysis and platforms linking multiple municipal and regional databases. “More cameras and more technology mean that, in just seconds, more than 3,000 simultaneous events can be recorded, tagged, catalogued, and stored in a database,” said Davi Carreiro. City officials said the expansion aligns Rio with global cities such as London and major Chinese metropolitan areas that rely on extensive camera networks and data-driven surveillance systems to manage public safety and urban security."
