Iranian citizens are "protestimg and revolting against the oppressive regime of Tehran," said PASOK-Movement for Change (KINAL) leader Nikos Androulakis on Wednesday, expressing solidarity to the Iranian people. "We join our voice to their demand for freedom, dignity, democracy," the main opposition leader said. "We unequivocally condemn the harsh repression, murders, summary executions, censorship, and the mass violations of human freedoms by a regime that has condemned the people of Iran to deprivations, poverty, and oppression," he added. The international community cannot remain silent before the escalation of violent repression, but must assume firm diplomatic initiatives for a democratic and free Iran, the PASOK-KINAL leader added. At the same time, he called on Greece, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, to hold an extraordinary meeting on the situation, while the European Union "should take even more drastic and effective measures and sanctions, to weaken the regime that is murdering its own citizens." The reaction of international organizations should be "coordinated, institutional, and decisive, for the support of free citizens and the true deepening of democracy and human freedoms in Iran," Androulakis concluded.
