LAHORE: The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has declared Punjab’s Tunnel Boring Trenchless Technology Project a ‘star project. An AIIB delegation called on Punjab Housing Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal on Wednesday to discuss loan agreements and ongoing development projects in the province. On the occasion, WASA Managing Director Lahore Ghafran Ahmed briefed the delegation on the key technical and operational aspects of the project. Environmental and technical experts included in the delegation reviewed the project’s technical, environmental, and practical dimensions and emphasised further collaboration with the Punjab government on additional development initiatives. The Secretary directed that all obstacles hindering the tunnel boring project should be resolved at the earliest. He stated that in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, modern and sustainable public-welfare projects are being introduced across the province. He added that, following the practices of developed countries, a modern sewerage system will be laid using tunnel boring technology. Under this project, 32 kilometres of dilapidated sewerage lines will be rehabilitated from Larex Colony to Gulshan-e-Ravi in Lahore. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
