Love me, Li? - Canadian PM meets Chinese premier as Carney pushes for reset after Trump tensions, 2018 Huawei crisis

"Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Thursday in Beijing, as Beijing and Ottawa push to revitalise relations after an eight-year stagnation. Footage shows the high level delegation sitting down for a meeting, after which Carney and Li can be seen shaking hands, overseeing a document signing and being received by the Chinese People's Liberation Army Guard of Honour. Li voiced China’s readiness to establish a 'strategic partnership' with Canada, highlighting that bilateral cooperation will benefit both nations. In response, Carney expressed Canada’s openness to Chinese investment and the importance of fostering people-to-people exchanges. Footage shows the PM and Premier observing the signing of a series of memoranda of understanding. The documents reportedly focused on energy, combating crime, modern wood construction, culture, food safety and plant and animal health. During the meeting, the two sides hailed the ‘renewal of bilateral engagement’ in the economy, security and other fields, according to the Canadian Prime Minister’s office's subsequent statement. On Friday, Carney is scheduled to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The four-day official visit to China is the first one by a Canadian prime minister since 2017.  Relations between Canada and China have faced crises after the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co., Meng Wanzhou, was detained in Canada in 2018 at the request of the US. In 2024, Ottawa supported US tariffs against Beijing, also imposing a 100 percent rate on EVs and 25 percent on steel and aluminium from China. "
