'We hope for the best' - Gazans react as Witkoff unveils phase two for post-war 'technocratic' govt as some slam 'tool of Israel', insist it 'must be supported by the people'

"Gazans appeared sceptical about the next phase of the peace plan on Thursday, as US envoy Steve Witkoff claimed 'phase two' negotiations - including the post-war 'technocratic' government for the enclave - would get underway. "I believe that forming a government with Israel's approval would be a failure, but both options are unpleasant, so we have to accept it... However, we can always hope for the best," Hadodat Abu Mashikh said. Adel Abu Nasr added: "In order to begin a new and sustainable life, any government formed must be supported by the people and key Arab countries, including Egypt, Algeria and Morocco. Our lives today are almost over, and we need people to stand with us and help us start again." Daher Abu Dikan claimed "the new government is merely a tool for Israel" while Nasser Hammad said any new administration had to focus on "security, education, health, food and water." Phase one covered the ceasefire, hostage-prisoner swaps and aid, while the second phase is about governance, reconstruction and 'demilitarisation'. There are already rows about what 'disarmament' of the Hamas group would look like and Israel has not committed to fully withdrawing either. Witkoff added that "The US expects Hamas to comply fully with its obligations...Failure to do so will bring serious consequences." "
