78 Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings return to sea in Calapan

CITY OF CALAPAN, Oriental Mindoro — Still within the nesting season, at least 78 Olive Ridley sea turtle hatchlings crawled back to the sea early Saturday morning (Jan. 17) in Barangay Navotas here. Bantay Dagat member Robert Flores of the city’s Fisheries Management Office (FMO) identified the hatchlings as Olive Ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea). Flores told the Inquirer at the site that the hatchlings were spotted at dawn along the shoreline near where fishing boats were docked, possibly drawn by artificial lights.
