Battle against cattle! Thrilling bull-taming festival kicks off in Tamil Nadu

"Traditional bull-taming festival, Jallikattu, kicked off in the southern state of Tamil Nadu on Friday, attracting adventure-seeking tourists and locals. Footage shows the animals fiercely trying to get past the group of participants who desperately struggled to get onto their humps to emerge victoriously.  "When I saw the bulls for the first time, I was nervous and scared. But I liked it a lot. It was exciting and enjoyable," one of the visitors, Sreenila, commented.  "Many people got injured. But at the same time, it was safe everywhere," another visitor, Swathi, added. "The happiness of the people who won the prize was superb. I enjoyed the event a lot." For the special occasion, participants decorated their bulls with colourful paint, beads, and flowers. "This is my fifth bull," bull owner Sonai Muthu said. "We have been raising bulls for 15-20 years to celebrate the festival of the Tamils. We have been winning prizes every year." The taming sport has a long history in the region, dating back more than 2,000 years. "This is the identity of the Tamil community. That is why we have been raising it for a long time. We spend Rs. 3000-4000 (about 33-44 USD) a month to raise it. We spent Rs. 2500 (about 28 USD) to rent a vehicle and bring the bulls here. So the prize doesn't matter," shared bull owner Illayaraja. Jallikattu is often held on the second day of the Pongal harvest festival, celebrated in mid-January. Despite its breathtaking spectacle, bull taming is an extremely dangerous sport, with seven people and more than 400 sustained injuries in Jallikattu and related bull taming events in January last year."
