'Our Greenland is Mercosur!' - VOX chief Abascal slams EU–LatAm deal, accuses Sanchez govt of 'destroying Spain'

"President of the conservative VOX Party, Santiago Abascal, criticised the EU-Mercosur trade agreement and slammed Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez over the government's agricultural and social policies, speaking at a rally in Fraga on Friday. "Greenland is Mercosur. It's the Green Deal. It's the farmers' problems. It's the insecurity in the streets. And it's our own interests," he remarked. "We have the rabble in the press, at the service of the corrupt two-party system, talking about very distant problems, about distant wars, some provoked because they want to drag us into more wars, and about problems that are completely fabricated [...] maybe we should do it to Sanchez, file a couple of lawsuits against him," he continued. He slammed the South American trade deal, warning it would worsen farmers' burden by increasing competition from imports already complicated by the Green Deal. "Enough of these scams. If they're the party of farmers, they should hold a vote of no confidence against von der Leyen and oppose the Green Deal and Mercosur," Abascal stated. Farmers across Europe have shared their distress regarding the EU-Mercosur deal, with months of protests amid broader grievances, including rising costs and stagnant incomes. While some European leaders have publicly opposed the deal, it is still expected to be signed in Paraguay on Saturday, with backing from a majority of EU countries. Despite the planned signing, the agreement will not take immediate effect. It must still be approved by the European Parliament and ratified by Mercosur member states, a process expected to take several months. Negotiated over 25 years, the deal would phase out most tariffs over 15 years, creating a free-trade area encompassing approximately 780 million people."
