"California Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday warned that the United States was in a 'code red' moment under President Donald Trump, accusing the Republican administration of 'stoking a civil war' in America ahead of the November midterm elections. Speaking in San Francisco at an event promoting California's 'Treatment Not Tents' homelessness initiative, Newsom described Trump's leadership as "an extraordinary wrecking ball presidency" that was "flailing in every category on a weekly basis." "This is code red in this country. It's not flashing yellows, it's code red in the United States of America," Newsom told reporters. "He is trying to stoke a civil war in this country," Newsom claimed, referencing the federalisation of National Guard troops in Los Angeles and Minneapolis. "It is a disgrace what he's doing all across the United States of America, terrorising communities," he continued. He also criticised the Department of Homeland Security's communications, saying they were "intentionally stoking tensions" and actively promoting 'white supremacy' under the Trump administration. "None of this is normal, and it cannot be normalised," Newsom said. "So we take it very seriously." Newsom urged American voters to see the upcoming midterm elections as a way to restore accountability. "I plead with the American people to wake up to what's going on. We have that chance. Take back the House of Representatives and take back the Senate." The 2026 United States midterm elections, scheduled for November 3, will see all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats contested. Republicans currently hold majorities in both chambers. Newsom, a prominent Democratic governor and critic of Trump, is also considered a potential front-runner for the 2028 presidential election, according to early polling and prediction markets."
