"Russian diplomats marked the anniversary of Warsaw's liberation from Nazi occupation on Saturday by laying wreaths at a Soviet military cemetery in the Polish capital. Footage shows members of the Russian diplomatic mission arriving at the site and laying wreaths at the memorial. The ceremony was led by Andrei Ordash, Russia's Charge d'Affaires in Poland, continuing a tradition of marking Warsaw's liberation by Soviet forces in 1945. "Even if there had been preparations for a provocation, we would still have come. We laid flowers at the memorial cemetery in Warsaw on this day, as we always do. This day is special," Ordash said. "Another reason we are here is to fight what we see as historical amnesia in Polish society, which over recent decades has begun to forget what happened here 81 years ago," he added. Ordash also addressed the detention of Russian citizen Alexander Butyagin in Poland over an extradition request, alleging judicial bias and saying Moscow would keep pushing for his release. Polish authorities had not responded to the claims at the time of publication. It comes after relations between Moscow and Warsaw have deteriorated in recent years, particularly since Russia's offensive in 2022, with Poland removing Soviet-era monuments it says symbolise post-war domination. Russia accused Poland of undermining memorial sites, claims Warsaw has denied, insisting recognised burial grounds remain protected under international agreements."
