'War knocks on the door' - Orban warns Hungary being 'forced' into Ukraine conflict as election looms

"Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Saturday warned that Hungary is being 'forced' into the Ukraine conflict, emphasising that the country must 'stay out of the war' as the April 2026 parliamentary elections approach. "Hungary is being forced and dragged into a war - it is not a theoretical possibility. [...] This is what knocks on the door every day, and I have to keep that door shut with all my strength," he said during the 'Digital Civic Circle' anti-war rally in Miskolc. "Being drawn into a war is a daily danger for Hungary, so the first prerequisite for any grand future plan is to stay out of the war," he stressed. The Prime Minister criticised the European Union, claiming the bloc has having shifted from a political body to a 'war council.' "In other words, in Western Europe there is real preparation for war," Orban said. "I recommend to anyone who has the interest or the inclination today to read about the period leading up to the outbreak of the First World War. A world war did not begin as a world war." He also dismissed the idea that the West will recover its funds through Russian reparations, calling the strategy a 'fairytale' and warning it could have serious consequences for Europe's economy. The EU recently approved an additional €90 billion loan for Kiev over the next two years, after the bloc failed to agree on a proposal to use €210 billion in frozen Russian assets. Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic opted out of the deal. Budapest has also opposed providing major military aid to Ukraine, citing concerns over corruption in Kiev. Hungarian officials have urged the European Union to suspend funding until there are clearer measures to ensure transparency and proper oversight."
