"Dozens of demonstrators rallied in Ouagadougou on Saturday to express solidarity with Venezuela and demand the release of Nicolas Maduro, who was captured by US forces earlier in January in an operation targeting Caracas and three states near the capital. Footage shows protesters chanting, waving Venezuelan flags and holding banners with portraits of now former president Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores and signs reading, 'Bring them back' as speakers address the crowd. "We believe that humanity cannot accept Donald Trump, under the rule of American interests alone, killing international law. That is why we are mobilising from Burkina Faso," said Serge Bayala, a rally participant. Another demonstrator, Hassan Bationo, emphasised the economic and social rights of Venezuelans, claiming, "We call on those who claim to be civilised and democratic to respect international law." "We demand the unconditional release of President Maduro and his wife. And [...] that the Venezuelan people be allowed to exercise their right to use Venezuelan oil to improve the living conditions of its citizens," he persisted. The protests come amid heightened tension following the violent US-led operation in Venezuela. The attack sparked demonstrations in multiple countries, particularly across Latin America and parts of Africa. According to Venezuelan Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace Diosdado Cabello, the operation left around 100 people dead and a 'similar number' injured. Currently, Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores are being held at a detention centre in New York, where they stand accused of acts of narco-terrorism."
