Zubiri: The power to choose own leaders important to region’s self-determination, self-governance’

MANILA, Philippines -- Sen.Juan Miguel Zubiri has filed a bill to reset to March 2026 the first parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The Senate majority leader filed Senate Bill (SB) 1587, which seeks to amend Section 13, Article XVI of Republic Act 11054, or the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL). SB 1587 resets the BARMM elections to March 30, 2026, with the elected officials’ term of office to begin at noon of April 30. The senator said the bill also mandates that the next BARMM election should be synchronized with the 2028 national elections and every three years thereafter. “It has been more than six years since the BARMM was established, and the Bangsamoro people have yet to exercise their power to elect their own leaders," Zubiri said in filing the measure. The Bangsamoro Parliament Authority (BTA) passed BTA Bill 415 or the Bangsamoro Parliamentary Districts Act of 2025 on Jan. 13. BTA Deputy Speaker Nabil Tan said that without the passage of a districting bill, parliamentary elections could not proceed.
