'A message to the world' - Gaza artist turns destroyed buildings into stunning murals

"Palestinian artist Ahmad Harara has been transforming the shattered walls of war-damaged buildings in Gaza into large-scale murals, using art to convey the resilience of both the city and its people. Footage captured on Saturday shows Harara painting on the remains of a flattened structure, depicting a tree coloured in the Palestinian flag. Graffiti bearing messages including “We remain as long as thyme and olives remain” can also be seen on nearby walls. Speaking about his artistic journey, Harara said his passion for art began in childhood. “I began drawing at the age of ten in Gaza City, where my passion for art was initiated in my childhood. I participated in several art exhibitions. With the onset of war, I started painting on the ruins of destroyed buildings, using my artwork to shed light on the steadfastness of the Palestinian people. This isn't just art; it is a message to the world,” he said. Harara said the move to painting murals came after losing both his home and materials during the fighting. “The impetus for these murals emerged after all our homes in the Al Shujaiya neighbourhood were flattened, forcing us to flee. No place left to paint except on the walls of the devastated buildings and homes,” he added. A ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel came into effect on October 10, 2025, as part of the 20-point 'Trump Plan'. The agreement includes an immediate halt to fighting, the release of all hostages, whether alive or deceased, and the delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza."
