(AP Photo/Evgeniy Maloletka) Britain will never let America take control of Greenland against its will, a cabinet minister has warned Donald Trump . Lisa Nandy said the UK government’s position on the Arctic island’s sovereignty is “non-negotiable”. The culture secretary spoke out after Trump said he would impose tariffs on the UK and seven other European countries for opposing his plan to take over Greenland, which is part of the kingdom of Denmark. Keir Starmer has already described the move as “completely wrong” . Nandy told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg: “We would never allow any changes to be made to the future of Greenland without the consent of the people of Greenland and the people of Denmark.” Appearing on Sky News earlier, the minister said: “As the prime minister has very clearly said we disagree with this decision. “We’re going to go and have that conversation with our American counterparts, and while we’re having that conversation with them, we’re also going to be talking about the security of the United Kingdom and the United States and how our interests are better served by working together. “Our position on Greenland is non-negotiable, we’ve made that very clear, and we’ll continue to make that clear.” Trump stunned Downing Street by announcing the unexpected move on his Truth Social site on Saturday. He said a 10% import tax will be imposed on Britain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Finland from February 1. That charge will rise to 25% on June 1 and remain in place until “until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” by America. Trump said: “World Peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it. They currently have two dogsleds as protection, one added recently. “Only the United States of America, under PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP, can play in this game, and very successfully, at that! Nobody will touch this sacred piece of Land, especially since the National Security of the United States, and the World at large, is at stake.” Greenland has been part of the kingdom of Denmark for more than 300 years.
