'Full military control' - Syrian forces assume command of Al-Jarrah Airport as SDF withdraw from eastern Aleppo

"Syrian transitional government forces have assumed control of Al-Jarrah Military Airport in the town of Deir Hafer, after the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) withdrew from eastern Aleppo on Saturday.  Footage shows the military airbase deserted by SDF soldiers, with large quantities of ammunition left behind.  Earlier, Syrian transitional government forces entered Deir Hafer, Maskana and Dibsi Afnan, resulting in reported clashes with the SDF, with both sides trading blame for breaching the withdrawal agreement. The forces also declared the west of the Euphrates a closed military zone. The Syrian army had previously claimed it would not target SDF soldiers during the withdrawal.  SDF leader Mazloum Abdi confirmed the withdrawal as part of the group's 'commitment to implementing the provisions of the March 10 agreement'.  Syrian transitional President Ahmed Al Sharaa earlier announced a decree that formally 'recognises the rights of Syrian Kurds'. The eight-point document includes provisions guaranteeing Kurdish as a national language alongside Arabic, as well as the recognition of Kurdish heritage, holidays, and other cultural rights.  The development unfolded following deadly clashes between the two sides in the neighbourhoods of Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsoud last week. The SDF eventually pulled out of the two neighbourhoods. On March 10, 2025, Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi signed an agreement to integrate all civil and military institutions affiliated with the Kurdish self-administration into the framework of the Syrian state by the end of 2025. However, the agreement had not been implemented at the time of publication, and sporadic clashes between the two sides have continued. In December 2024, Syria’s transitional government took power in Damascus, with Ahmed al-Sharaa later appointed transitional president, pledging to form an inclusive government."
