Indonesia plane crash - Search teams recover fuselage parts after passenger flight vanishes over Sulawesi peaks

"Indonesian rescue teams recovered wreckage on Sunday in the search for a missing plane carrying 11 passengers that is believed to have crashed while approaching the mountainous region of Sulawesi Island. Footage captured on Sunday morning shows the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) conducting aerial and ground searches in the Mount Bulusaraung area in cloudy conditions, one day after the ATR 42-500 aircraft operated by Indonesia Air Transport went missing. Rescuers on the ground retrieved larger debris consistent with the fuselage and tail, scattered on a steep northern slope of the mountain. The aircraft lost contact on Saturday, January 17, 2026, around 1 pm local time while flying from Yogyakarta to Makassar. It is reported to have crashed on the slopes of Mount Bulusaraung, near Maros and Pangkep regencies in South Sulawesi. On board were eight crew members and three passengers from the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, who were on an airborne maritime surveillance mission. Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) said it has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash."
