"At least five officers of the National Civil Police (PNC) have been killed in a series of coordinated attacks across Guatemala on Sunday. Footage shows firefighters performing CPR on a police officer, while first responders can be seen deployed to different areas across Guatemala City and Antigua. The Volunteer Firefighters Corps reported on Sunday morning that two officers were shot dead in an armed attack outside the Villa Nueva Justice Centre on Aguilar Batres Road. Rafael Zuniga, spokesperson for the Municipal Firefighters Corps (CBM), confirmed three additional police fatalities in separate attacks in Zone 11 (Roosevelt Road), Zone 10 and Villalobos. The killings follow coordinated riots at the Fraijanes II, Renovacion I and Sector 11 prisons, where Barrio 18 gang members held more than 40 people hostage, including prison guards. The inmates reportedly orchestrated the takeover to demand better conditions for their incarcerated leaders. On Sunday morning, the PNC regained control of Renovacion I. The operation resulted in the rescue of all hostages and the neutralisation of the gang's identified top leader, Aldo Duppie - also known by his alias, 'El Lobo'."
