"Chile's Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Alvaro Elizalde Soto, reported that the government carried out a 'significant deployment' of resources to tackle the wildfires affecting the Nuble and Biobio regions in the centre-south of the country, speaking at a press conference in Santiago on Sunday. He highlighted that more than 3,700 firefighters and at least 430 emergency vehicles have been mobilised to combat the blazes, which forced the evacuation of around 50,000 people as a preventive measure due to the advance of the flames. "In the case of the Nuble Region, there are 1,200 firefighters deployed, 168 fire engines, and in the case of the Biobio Region 2,500 firefighters and 264 fire engines. This reflects a significant deployment of the strategic capabilities that our country has to face this emergency," the interior minister elaborated. "During yesterday and today, 87 SAE (Emergency Alert System) alerts have already been sent to proceed with evacuations, and these alerts have covered more than 50,000 people who are carrying out evacuation tasks in order, obviously, always to safeguard the lives of all Chilean women and men and those who live in the area," he added. Chilean authorities indicated that, for now, a curfew will not be imposed in the Nuble region, while its possible application in Biobio will be assessed by the local Head of National Defence, Rear Admiral Edgardo Acevedo. "Just as we are focused on evacuation in the areas affected by the fires so that no new fires are caused, because this has had good results in previous seasons, the possibility of decreeing a curfew will be evaluated and announced in due course to limit the movement of people for a certain period of time, particularly during the night," stated Elizalde. According to authorities, there are more than 20 active fire fronts, mainly concentrated in the Nuble and Biobio regions, with nearly 24,000 hectares burned, hundreds of homes destroyed, and at least one fatality confirmed at the time of publication. The advance of the fires affected both rural and urban areas, including the Lirquen sector, prompting a large-scale deployment of state and emergency resources, as firefighting operations and damage assessments continue."
