CIDG probing billion-peso BFP anomalies — Remulla

MANILA, Philippines—The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) is investigating alleged billion-peso anomalies within the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed Monday, with a full report expected soon and subsequent charges set to be filed with the Ombudsman. The investigation, described by Remulla as “deep-seated”, involves rigged bidding, overpriced fire safety equipment, and forced purchases tied to fire safety inspection certificates. Preliminary findings indicate annual kickbacks could exceed P15 billion. An initial group of 20 senior BFP officials, including Bureau Chief Jesus Fernandez, are under scrutiny. Remulla has recommended Fernandez’s termination due to his alleged involvement in the irregularities. Specific cases uncovered include overpriced fire extinguishers linked to supplier collusion and a P30-million under-the-table deal in Quezon City. Remulla said the CIDG is reviewing the activities of BFP officials in the past five years. “The CIDG is finalizing its report, and charges will be filed with the Ombudsman shortly,” he said.
